Wicklow Mountains National Park
Common Frog

Common Frog, Frog, Rana temporaria

The Common Frog is the most widespread of Ireland's amphibians and is found in all the habitats of the Park from blanket bog to coniferous woodland. It is the only species of frog found in Ireland although it can vary greatly in colour depending on the primary colour of its surrounding habitat. Colour varies from pale yellow to dark purple on the top and the underside is usually paler and sometimes speckled. The Common Frog will breed in all types of water bodies and frog's spawn is often found in bog pools within the Park. Although common within the Park and the country as a whole, the Common Frog is a protected species because European populations have been declining.
