Wicklow Mountains National Park
Common Lizard

Common Lizard, Laghairt Bheobhreitheach, Lacerta vivipara

The Common Lizard (also known as the Viviparous Lizard) is the only lizard in the Park and in Ireland. It has adapted to live in cooler climates by giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The lizard is common in the Park and is pictured basking in the sun on the boardwalk along the 'Spinc and Glenealo Valley' (White) walking trail. They usually lie quite still and are difficult to see, until your presence disturbs them and you will notice a sudden dart of movement as they scurry away. However, this pregnant female was content to remain still long enough to be photographed.

Thanks to Jim Turner from Ireland for the picture.
