Wicklow Mountains National Park

Bird Checklist

Over a hundred species of bird have been recorded in the Park. However some species are a lot easier to see than others. Many of the species listed below are common but some are quite rare and may not have been sighted for several years.

Certain species stay in the Park all year round and breed here and are known as resident. Other species visit the Park in the summer and may have travelled up from the surrounding lowlands or flown in from other countries. Some visitors come in the winter to escape the harsh winters further north while vagrants may turn up completely unexpectedly. Vagrants are birds not usually found in Ireland. They may have been blown off their usual flight-paths by strong winds or have come here looking for new areas to colonise.

The Park Management Plan has the following additional details in Appendix 6:

  • whether they are resident, visitors or vagrants;
  • the type of habitat they are found in;
  • their conservation status according to Birdwatch Ireland;
  • if they are listed on annex I of the Birds Directive.
