Arctic Char Salvelinus alpinus
This fish has been in Ireland since the end of the last Ice Age. The 'Arctic' part of it's name indicates that it is an inhabitant of cold climates. In Ireland it is now confined to land-locked and isolated populations in deep, nutrient poor lakes. Until recently it was believed that Wicklow could still have Arctic Char in Lough Dan, Lough Tay and the Upper Lake in Glendalough. However, a recent comprehensive survey of the lakes has proved that the Arctic Char is now extinct in Co. Wicklow.
